This group was probably set up in the late
1970's.
We meet every other month at differing venues. We prefer to have a Chairman
& secretary, and are usually 5-7 people. We need people with ideas & a certain
amount of vision. We also need those with patience! To put these ideas into
action can often take a long time - so often other groups & authorities are
involved. We also look for smaller, local problems, such as 'Eyesores' - places
where maintenance has been neglected, areas where small improvements are needed.
Sometimes these can be little hands on jobs for us (painting, litter etc.)
So we keep a watching brief and inform and liaise with our Local & Unitary
Councils. We do of course report to the Executive Committee. Our aim is always
to improve our local environment - either alone or in conjunction with others.
Over the years we have developed a small derelict tract of ground into a small
park, improved a roundabout & found funding for suitable lamp standards, inaugarated
litter collection days, refurbished all of Clevedon's fountains. We have sponsored
a gazebo in Alexandra Rd Gardens and dedicated it to Lady Elton who was our
president since the Civic Society was created.
We have recently renovated the Victorian Shelter on the Beach, built an Archway
to the entrance to Salthouse Fields and restored the ruined Sugar Lookout
on Poet's Walk.
