Firstly let me wish all Society members a
Happy New Year as we enter the real Millennium.
Secondly the observant will see that your editor has at last become modernised!
Away with the goose-quill pen and ink stand. - The Civic Society itself is
now going to the World Wide Web and I could not be left behind.
I must confess that it was not without some misgivings, but 'Biting the Bullet'
I got myself connected, - What a complete new world lay before me. One of
the first finds was a person from British Columbia - no less - who was busy
putting
the 1851 census for Somerset, Bristol and Gloucester onto Compact Disc.
Immediately I sent off for discs. I also asked if he would like the census
for Clevedon & locality for the years which I have transcribed and sent him
a copy. He put them out for free on his Website and before I knew it I had
a message thanking me for the contribution from Lyn Nunn in Brisbane Australia.
She was researching the North Somerset Caple family. An ancestor of hers was
the Editor/Owner of the Clevedon Mercury. Another message came from closer
to home from Priddy on Mendip.
Six messages were exchanged between Clevedon and Brisbane in three days. What
a difference from letter post, even air mail would have taken six weeks at
least for the same numbers of letters.
See Random Rovings for a saucy bit of gossip concerning Mr George Caple, the
late Mercury Editor. The Civic Site will be www.Clevedon-Civic-Society.org.uk
