Wells Watercourses

5 walkers braved early rain but persevered in this enjoyable stroll following the watercourses in the City of Wells.

Starting at the Bishop's Palace, in the grounds of which are the springs which are the main source of the free-running water in Wells, we had a coffee and cake in the cafe before walking though the Bishop's Eye gate into Wells Marketplace.

There we visited the site of the Bishop's Mill and paused for a group photo at the Market Cross, then walked down the High Street, with its twin streams of fresh water that run down either side of the road.

We made some diversions down side streets and lanes, visiting the sites of several of the various mills that used the streams that ran down from the springs to power their machinery, before retiring to the Quarter Jack pub for lunch.
